Joining or creating a League is one of the earliest quests on Batheo, and it is easy enough to join one of the myriad Leagues that people have created. However, the lure of hosting of one of the top guilds in your faction is difficult to resist. So you create a League, which only requires 100 Laurels, but once the League is started, it is near impossible to get it off the ground and actually grow. Here are a few steps that will help in getting your League up and running (in the order of importance):
1) Membership. Nothing can substitute for diligence. Advertise your League on chat, and personally mail dozens of gamers that you would like to have in your League. If you have friends from other servers, use those ties to recruit. A personal touch goes a long way when there are countless Leagues to choose from. This step is crucial because it is hardest to get people to join when you are the sole member. Once you get League membership up to a few people, more people will want to join. Early recruiting is especially difficult if you are on an older server and there are already several well-established guilds. Your odds are better on a new server. If you fail to get the second member after days of trying, you can use your second email address to create another character in the same server (I will call this the proxy character). Join the League you have created using this proxy character, and your League will look as though it is getting off the ground. When it begins to look promising, more people will join.
2) Member capacity. You are going to need to commit a lot of drachmas (or your proxy will have to). You need to invest Drachmas in the League Level in order to increase the League’s member capacity. This is very important because the Leagues are arranged in the order of their member capacity and not by their total membership. This means that if your League capacity is one of the highest, you will be listed on the front page even if you are currently the only member in the League. Being on the front page means more people will see you League. This enhances your chance of getting new members.
3) Badge. Upgrading the League Badge matters for two reasons. First, it increases member capacity (see #2). Second, it makes your league look better. This will cost you precious gold (or your proxy’s gold), but it is a necessary investment if you want to get your League up and running. Appearance matters to people, and people are more likely to join a League with a shiny badge than one with a shabby badge.
4) Member quality. When you successfully get a League up and running, you need to make sure to weed out inactive players. If your League is full of non-contributing Lvl 2’s, your League won’t stand a chance against other top Leagues. Try to keep at least one spot open in your League at all times, so that you can continue to receive applications and pick the best players. Remove inactive players and recruit active ones.
