Suggestions, from what I observed personally:
1. Sult helps a bit early/mid through the map for reaching out to the hidden mages. Later on Sult won't be of much use vs yellow NPCs. However, Sult's presence in PvP is more prominent. I haven't tried Edjo, but she should be similar.
2. Anubis is a must-have, works very well with a solid-double wash.
3. Kylin can help, but no need to delay the progress due to this. Bear in mind, Kylins are the future of BMs though.
4. Thunderstorm mage plays a crucial role and can make things easier through some critical battles. This is a reason one can feel proud of being an Athenian as Asteria has solid base stats and faculty. Mist is a pretty good mage who makes life easier too. Cyclone mage, if available can work well. Asclepius if available, can be a lifesaver even with 0 book against one NPC with Meteorite mage.
5. Most would have trained up Heimdall already for Anubis battle. He would work as the tank even thru Nils. No need for any additional hero.
6. No need to waste time, divs and gems on yellow arms. Nils can be done with just Grade 0 arms.
7. About enchants - 2x Spirit sets, 1x Element set and 1x valor set are important and can be easily done. Second valor set and Element set are not critical.
8. Red books are more than enough for Nils(with Grade 0 arms ofc).
9. If you are a VIP who can access red horns already, save gold for a red horn or two which can be good investment for a quicker progression. If you are a non-VIP but don't intend to spend cash out of your pocket, try some offers. If you are non-VIP and don't intend to become a VIP by any means, I'd suggest forgetting about the mages altogether; start working on kylins and 3 BMs and gamble with divs. All of these can still get past Nils, which has been proven already.
10. Most common heroes to be used(so that one can plan ahead): Sult/Edjo/Skuld, Anubis, Cronus, another bugler, TS mage, Mist, Cyclone mage(not an option for Athenians), Heimdall and Asclepius.
