I don't know much about it, but there is also a relative spirit "effect." For example, if I have 255 spirit and I attack your guy with 100 spirit, your guy takes a lot of damage call it x. If your guy has 50 spirit, you still take x. If your guy has 150 spirit, you still take x. If your guy has 200 spirit, you still take x. If your guy has 201 spirit, you start to take less damage because it is within 1-55 of my spirit.
So if your bugler is washed +100 from 49, he has 149 spirit. That won't help against my lotis washed to +130 + 60 ie 278 spirit.
